Fishing Guide
to
Wales
and the Borders

By popular demand from visiting anglers I have been asked on many occasions
“Where best to go fishing including best facilities such as refreshments, toilets, disable access etc”
Therefore I have introduced for each venue within the guide my personal
1-5 star rating *****.
Including my personal views, helping anglers decide where best to experience
this great sport of ours.
I recommend that you phone first and check details before setting out. You will need a valid Environment Agency rod licence to fish at any venue listed

RIVER CONWY

The Conwy. previously spelled Conway, is rated as one of the finest Sea Trout Rivers in the UK. Big runs of Sea trout begin in June and go on until September. there are Salmon too, and these move best in high water with peak catches in mid May end of June. These fish are caught all the way up to the Conwy falls above Betwys-y-Coed. Brown trout offer the main sport. The river finds its scource in Llyn Conwy close to Pen Y bedw. from there it strikes north-east to pentrefoelas, swinging north-west to Betws-y-Coed, moving on due North through the Conwy Valley to enter the estuary at Tal-y-cefn.

SEA

Location; NORTH WALES

The North-Wales coastline has something for everyone: golden sandy beaches, productive rock marks, and secluded tidal estuaries where the only interruptions are the mournful cries of curlew and oyster catcher. All this, plus opportunity to catch a wide variety of fish species, creates the recipe for a great sea-fishing holiday.

Dinas Dinlle is one of many sandy beaches in Gwynedd that provide great sport not only for surfers but also for bass fishers. From the west-facing beach there is a wonderful view along the coast of Llyn Peninsula with the Yr Eifl Mountains in the background.

One of the big advantages of basing an angling holiday here is that, regardless of in which direction or how strong the wind blows, there is always a sheltered, safe mark to fish within a short drive. The island of Anglesey and the Llÿn Peninsula are both good examples of this geographical advantage.

Lovely Llÿn The quality of shore fishing found at these venues is legendary. For example, on the Llÿn you will have the option of spinning, float fishing or bottom fishing from the rocks or, if conditions are suitable, fishing the surf for bass on one of the country's most famous and spectacular storm beaches, Porth Neigwl (Hell's Mouth).

The headland at Morfa-Nefyn, on the north coast of the Llÿn, is a highly rated rock mark. It produces an astonishing variety of fish, including some very big wrasse and pollack.

Boat fishing Boat anglers can book a charter from various ports, including Aberystwyth, Port Dinowic, and Rhyl. Small boats can be launched at sites throughout the region with Trefor, situated on the north shore of the Llÿn Peninsula, being one of the most popular.

Boats either fish inshore for such species as tope, bream, rays, huss and bass, or they venture further offshore among the wrecks which litter the seabed. Here you will encounter fighting fit pollack, many weighing above 10lb, along with cod, coalfish, ling and conger. Indeed, only recently has the true potential of the offshore wreck fishing of North Wales been fully appreciated, and certainly the best catches must be yet to come.

Fishing these wrecks you experience a quality of fishing that used to be associated with the best ports in the south of England, and at very modest cost.

Tackle and bait Live or artificial sandeel fished on lightweight tackle is the favoured wrecking technique. Not only is light tackle far more fun and more exciting to use - imagine playing a 20 1b pollack or cod on the equivalent of spinning tackle - but invariably it is also more effective. This same sporting approach can be put to good use for bass on marks closer to the shore.

Fertile attraction For many years North Wales has been one of the most popular coastal holiday areas in the UK. Many of the people who visit this beautiful part of the country come here to fish, and the majority of them return year after year. A few have simply never gone back home! That in itself speaks volumes for the quality of the sea fishing in this part Wales.
