Fishing near Berlin / Germany

Last weekend the last part of the COLMIC Challenge Germany started on the Sacrow-Paretzer-Canal near Berlin.
The Canal is full of roach and skimmers with the odd big bream.A gale force wind made fishing very difficult on Saturday. Proper bait presentation for bream was nearly impossible (feederfishing was banned), so many anglers either fished the Bolognese-style or a 9m – whip to hand.
I used my 9 m Colmic E-xtreme whip to catch roach and small skimmers.
I fed an egg-sized ball of groundbait, laced with casters every cast and ended up with 12 kg for the section win.

My groundbait was 5 kilos “Giga Bream” of my sponsors own brand and 2 kg of my own “secret” additive, consisting of crushed hemp, pastoncino (Italian birdfeed) and spices. The weather on Sunday was beautiful with only a light breeze.
I draw a reasonable peg in my section and set up bream-gear only. I fished with 4 an 6 gr floats on a 0,14 mm mainline and a 0,10 mm hooklength, tied to No. 14 and 12 hooks.
Usually I start with maggots on this canal, to catch a few roach before the bream move in. On this day a worm was crawling out of his bait tube just when I was baiting my hook. So I took the worm instead of the usually maggot. The float ran just a foot and disappeared. I stroke and hooked the first skimmer. That would become a fine day, because it usually takes at least 30 minutes to catch the first bream!I went on catching bream.
My neighbours also caught fish, but they had longer breaks between their catches. At the end of the day I had 18 kg of bream and skimmers, the second in section caught 14 kg.
With two section wins I was lucky enough to win the whole match and was rewarded with a 13 m Colmic Match 407 pole, worth about 1100 Euro.Fishing around Berlin is really great with countless lakes and canals, which all belong to the same system and are full of fish.
If you ever have the chance to fish there, do it.
Even five times Worldchampion Alan Scotthorne fished in this area last year and was delighted of the potential of the canals

This week in the Czech Republic

Fishing in the Czech Republic

As fishing for money prices is not allowed in Germany, one of the highlights in the German match calendar is a match just across the border in Cheb / Czechia on the scenic Skalka reservoir. The lake is full of bream, white bream and roach. White bream is a species similar to bream but with the fighting power of a hybrid.
The first price is 3.500 € with two more money-prices, many valuable tackle prices and a superpool for the best overall weights.
Feederfishing is not allowed, so the main tactics are sliderfishing and fishing the long pole to hand, depending on the peg you have drawn.
If you find about 6, 7 foot of water in that distance, you can fish an 8 m pole to hand. If fish is there, you can catch a fish every cast. Most anglers use a 4 gr Colmic Jolly-style float, 0,18 mm mainline, a 0,14 mm hooklength and a No. 12 hook.
You will need a lot of bait to keep the fish in your swim. 6 pints of caster, 2 kg of worms and a pint of maggots for hookbait is the standard.
What you don`t use is corn, neither in the groundbait, nor on the hook, because it catches the wild carp, which are in big numbers in the lake. The carp weigh only 2 to 3 lbs., but they are very powerful and will ruin your swim. In the time you play a carp you can catch at least the same weight in bream, but without disturbance in your swim. So, forget about the corn.
On the best pegs you will catch right from the start. The white bream are weighing about 6 oz to a pound, so you have to catch a lot of wish for a winning weight of 30 to 40 kg.
On pegs which are to shallow for pole Fishing, the slider is the weapon to build up a good weight. In A section with depth up to 8 m (25 m from the bank), but also in some other sections you can catch white bream and bream up to 2 kg with the running line. Loaded wagglers with about 10 gr built-in weight and 4 gr down the line will do the job. Because it is a wide open lake there sometimes is a strong wind and you will have to fish with heavier floats, up to 25 gr.
It`s important to feed regularly by catapult to attract and hold the fish. 10 kg of groundbait is the minimum to take with you.
Beside the german anglers there are also former and current members of national teams from Italy, Austria, Holland and Czechia in the match. So, it`s not easy to win that match, but with a decent draw everything is possible…
Social life is another highlight during the festival days. The prices in Czechia are very low to the people from the “West”, so you have to pay for a complete meal with starter and dessert about 12 €.
But the most important thing is the price of the beer: For a pint of Pilsner Urquell or Budweiser you only pay 0,80 €. So its as doubled as nice to have a few pints after the match.
So after all it`s a very interesting event to British anglers. The venue will suit your fishing methods, especially if you are Ireland-experienced.
The date is the last weekend in August every year.
On the second weekend in September there is a similar event on the same lake but this time for pairs (2 anglers on every peg).
I hope to see you in Cheb. For further information don`t hesitate to contact me.
