WASH OUT

Matches throughout much of England and Wales were washed out at the weekend (NOV 98) as floods again gripped the nation. One of the country's biggest matches at this weekend, the annual Reading DM Shield, saw 154 anglers book in. But 48 otthose didn't even bother getting out of bed on Sunday after the previous day's deluge over Berkshire. The River Kennet from Upper Benyon'sto Reading was very high and coffee coloured, making it impossible to fish. Heavy leads and smelly big baits were practically the only viable option. Dave Bowditch (Freemasons PH) anchored luncheon meat for two barbel going 9-10-0, the lowest ever winning weight for this long running competition. He went home with £150 after catching his first wisker at 11am, waiting until 2pm for the second winning bite on Upper Benyon's. Alan Tucker (Civil Service) used a home-made meatball and heavy lead to connect with an 8-13-0 bar- bel at 2pm from the same section as over 60 per cent of the competitors blanked. Berkshire Angling's Ian Duckett was third, others: John Main (Prestcold) 3-14; Dave Butler ahatchamAc) 2-4-0; Mick Dedman (Reading) 1-3-0.

FIFTH DIVISION NATIONAL WIN FOR LITTLE LEVER

LITTLE LEVER landed the gold medals on their return to the National Championship arena after missing the last two years. Speaking after the Bridgewater Canal showdown, one of the lowest weight Nationals of all time, skipper Geoff Terry said, 'We knew it was going to be a hard match. 'The water was getting clearer by the day on the three weeks' run-up to the match but our tactics of chopped worm and squatt and searching every inch of the swim proved dead right. This is a tremendous result for us. Although he praised all the squad, Terry picked out section winner Joe Lawrence for a special mention. 'Wherever we fish Joe catches a pike and gives the team a boost and he did it again in this match. We are now full of confidence to defend our Warrington Team Challenge title,' added Geoff, 51, an engineering works manager. The team fished with 406 points from peg 19, giving them a 16 point margin over runners-up Team Fishamania. The Yorkshire outfit, in their first National, collected 390 points from peg 27. Skipper Dave Pilgrim, 37, an insurance rep from Sowerby Bridge near Halifax, said: 'The whole team was fully committed and we came through in true Yorkshire-grit style. Six of the team hadn't fished the water previously. 'We didn't pick the team until three days before the event. Andy Barker was called in late and did fantastic to finish third in his section.' Third-placed Metro AC from Sunderland considered the enormous effort of an estimated 16,000 practice miles worthwhile! Skipper Steve Richardson, 37, a welder from Stocksfield, Northum- berland, said: 'We spent 12 weeks practising with up to ten anglers on the canal. It was time consuming and expensive but well worth it.,

ALAN SCOTTHORNE WINS THE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP  THREE TIMES RUNNING

ALAN SCOTTHORNE has become the first angler ever to become World Champion three years on the trot after yet another perfect victory. Super Al's moment of history was the icing on the cake for Drennan Team England at the weekend in Croatia as our lions roared to another team victory under veteran mastermind Dick Clegg. The side had travelled to the Jarun rowing course at Zagreb knowing little about the stocks but two weeks' hard practice had other teams on the brink of throwing in the towel. And there was no fear from the big fella from Barnsley, South Yorkshire, who had topped his previous three sections in World events. He made it a hat-trick, to follow those successes in 1996 on Italy's River Mincic and last summer at Lake Velence ir Hungary, by again being unbeatable in his section on each three hour event. It further enhances Alan's stature as the greatest match angler EVER, in the wake of successes this year at both the European Championships on Portugal's River Raia and the Home International at Holme Pierrepont, Nottingham. The Shimano-backed 36-year-old full- timer, who went to Croatia with Dave Vincent straight from the ladies World Champs in Italy, said: 'I thought it was impossible to win it for a third time - the venue seemed very patchy. 'But I've had the rub of the green and everything has gone right - it's incredible. I came to win the team match - not the indivduaI~' Alan, who worked hard with the other five England squad men plus coach Mark Addy before Dick took charge for the final selections, was also quick to praise the man who was tipped to take the coaching hot seat - Mark Downes. Mark could hardly bear to watch , as Alan netted a late 3 kg grass carp at the second attempt in front of a huge gallery. With out that lively bonus, his hat-trick hopes would have sunk in the crystal clear Jamn depths. 'Mark has been brilliant running the section and has kept me in touch with what's going on,' said Alan, who came good late on Sunday. Alan finished on that perfect two piont score, with an aggregate 9.726 kg his nearest rival Phillippe Carroyer Belgium notching three points. Former World Champion, the chain-smoking Portugal angler Mai Barros was third with four points
