RECORD ZANDER

THE British zander record has been smashed out of sight with this stunning 21lb 5oz specimen.
The huge fish, which eclipses Dave Lavender’s existing record of 19lb 5oz 8dr, caught from the Middle Level in Cambridgeshire in March 1998, was taken by 19-year-old James Benfield from the River Severn.
Although a keen predator angler, James actually caught the monster zed whilst on a bream session, after it picked up his halibut pellet, fished in conjunction with a Fox method feeder.
“I only had my bream net with me, and it was a bit of a tight fit to get it in! When it was on the bank, we couldn’t quite believe what we were looking at,” said a delighted James

Roach record broken, but second claim spawns doubt

THE British roach record, seen by many as the most desirable prize in freshwater fishing, has been broken after 16 years, certainly with one fish and possibly with a second.

The two were taken within days of one another. The first, caught from an Ulster lake by Keith Berry, an estate manager from Bangor, Co Down, weighed 4lb 4oz. It beat by an ounce the 1990 record, taken by Ray Clarke from the River Stour, Dorset. Ratification of Berry’s fish by the British Record Fish Committee (BRFC) looks certain as the right criteria seem to have been met and the roach has been identified as a pure-bred.

Ratification of the second fish, taken by Mark Smith, an Army engineer, from a lake at Bassingbourne Barracks on the Cambridgeshire border, may prove to be more problematic. Although it appeared to be a true roach in the pictures submitted for identification, a couple of defining characteristics were obscured by the way Smith was holding the fish. The possibility that this fish is the product of a spawning between a roach and some larger species therefore cannot be ruled out. Hybridisation in fish is commonplace.

As a result, whatever the BRFC decides on this fish will leave some dissatisfied and strengthen the growing argument for DNA testing to be added to record-claim criteria.

Death of the UK’s record barbel

The Great Ouse barbel known as The Traveller – which holds the UK record at a weight in excess of 21 lb – was recently found dead and partially-eaten at Adams Mill.

While there’s speculation about what kind of predator could have overcome and killed such a huge fish, no one can never know for certain what happened.

Though appearing healthy when last caught it was obviously a considerable age and it is just as feasible that it died, or was dying, naturally and was then found by a predator which dragged it ashore to eat.

Apart from marks where something had bitten into it under its throat, the rest of the fish appeared to be fresh and in otherwise unmarked condition.

Obviously the death of the largest-ever recorded UK barbel is a sad event, but for the future at least two other fish in excess of 19 lb each are known to inhabit the area and are growing fast.

RIVER DON RESTOCKING
Fisheries officers from the Environment Agency will be releasing thousands of fish into the River Don to restore stocks killed by a pollution incident in July.
Around 10,000 roach will be brought from the Environment Agency’s Calverton Fish Farm at Nottingham and released at locations in the Kilnhurst and Conisborough area.
Restocking of the rivers will further improve ecology of the regions rivers, where water quality continues to improve year on year. This follows an earlier stocking when 2,600 dace and 1,400 chub were released earlier this month.
Fisheries Team Leader Pat O’Brien said: “We have a three-year programme which targets rivers and stillwaters that would benefit most from restocking, but we need to re-prioritise this programme to stock those rivers in greatest need.
“Restocking is only one part of our recovery plan for the River Don and we are in active discussion with angling groups to ensure we give the river the best possible support to restore the fishery to its full potential and encourage anglers back onto the riverbank.” In July this year, intense rainfall caused sewage from storm overflows  to enter the River Don at Sheffield and Rotherham. Oxygen levels in the water collapsed and Environment Agency officers worked against the clock to save hundreds of fish.
Further restocking of rivers in the region is planned for 2007.

TREE OIL
Robert came home from Choke Canyon Lake fishing just like he always did every other weekend. However this time he had his hand in a cast. "Broke your hand?" I asked. "Nope, spined by a catfish!" he replied. "Why the cast?" The story suddenly takes a terrible turn.

My mouth flew open, as I had never heard of such casual occurrence going bad. It seems there is a common bacteria on fish and in lakes that if directly entering the blood stream through a cut or puncture could be fatal. This strain of bacteria is in the family of Staphylococcus. The bacteria entered the blood stream on the catfish spine. Robert washed it off in the lake and continued to fish and within 30 minutes the pain became so unbearable that he stopped fishing to go to the hospital. Within minutes of arriving in the emergency room, Robert was making the decision to possible die or hope that amputation of his finger at the joint next to his palm would save his life. The amputation did save his life.

Most fishermen have no First Aid Kit in their Tackle Box. Of those who do, few have a strong over the counter antibiotic that would have helped Robert. There is a product called tea tree oil that comes in a small bottle that should be in every tackle box. Find it on line or click here as our recommendation http://www.n-ergetics.com/ecart/Scripts/prodView.asp?idproduct=236. Hooks can puncture the skin and have these bacteria on it from a fish or the water. A knife cut can be protected with a few drops of tea tree oil. I have used this very inexpensive natural antibiotic for 11 years and watched the skin heal with no infection of any kind. This is a tip that could save your life, or another fisherman with you!
